Day 8: Heroes Meeting Heroes

My darling wife is officially on her way. Today Emilie left the United States and is currently enroute to the middle east.

She left this morning with a large group of fellow soldiers all headed for various places in the middle east. On the way, they made one stopover in upper New England and upon deplaning, were greeting by a bit of a "send-off" party which included American military hero John McCain.

Emilie called me while they were waiting and told me she'd just shook hands with John McCain. I asked if she'd told him she voted for him or that one of her husband's favorite things in Vietnam was visiting the "Hanoi Hilton" or if she'd gotten a picture with him. Since all of the answers to these were "no", she hung up and went to see if she could at least get a picture with him on her cell phone.

A few minutes later I got this on my cell phone: Apparently her conversation with him included something like: "One of my husband's favorite things in Vietnam was getting to see the prison where you were during the war"..."Really. How did he get the chance to be there? Just vacationing?"..."No, our daughter is adopted from Vietnam and he went when he was there to bring her home."..."Oh, that's great!"


Emilie thought it was odd that Senator McCain was in upper New England, a LOOOONG way from D.C. or Arizona but I told her he has always been the type that, if he was going to be in that general region for something and knew there was a group of soldiers on there way to deployment he would add it to his schedule.

Regardless of your political affiliation, you have to give props to a guy who goes takes the time and goes out of the way to make the day of a bunch of soldiers who are on their way to war.
